Marettimo

 

The Marettimo island part of Aegadian and there is the small village Marettimo, in the municipality of Favignana, the province of Trapani.
The ancient greek island name, mentioned by Polybius, was Hierà Nesos, meaning "Sacred Island." The current name probably derives from "Maritime", the Latin name of the island that had already appeared in 'The Antonine Itinerary of the [second century AD] Some scholars suggest that the origin of the name is to be found in the abundant presence of wild thyme. This is not the only type of grass that grows spontaneamante island, whose special climate has contributed to an extraordinary vegetation.
